Go Green in With Your Office Refurbishment

Promoting environmentally friendly office refurbishment

In today's environmentally conscious society - you may wonder what sort of things an office refurbishment firm can do to be green – you'd be surprised!

At the office

Carbon Neutral websiteCarbon Neutral website

Fanstart Interiors have a Carbon Neutral website – using COCO2’s carbon offsetting facility. A website server is constantly using electricity - using a facility such as this means that the energy used and therefore carbon emissions created, by our website in a year is calculated. The amount of carbon created into the atmosphere is then offset by investment into projects such as planting trees, creating wind farms and into renewable energy projects throughout the world – visit www.coco2.co.uk for details.

Recycled paperRecycled paper

All paper used in Fanstart's offices is Recycled. We purchase recycled paper from www.thegreenoffice.co.uk. All waste paper is also recycled.

Energy saving facilitiesEnergy saving facilities

All computers we use are set up to make full use of the energy saving facilities, available in system set up.

Energy efficient office appliancesEnergy efficient office appliances

Energy efficient office appliances are used where possible.

Save paperSave paper

We have a email printing policy in place, where all employees only print emails when absolutely necessary. Regular back ups and safe storage of existing data from our computers, means that only important emails are printed out, drastically reducing our paper consumption.

Energy efficient lightingEnergy efficient lighting

All lamps within our offices are energy efficient, and any existing fittings now use energy efficient lamps – We've realised that Energy saving lamps are a good idea for our pocket and for the environment. They use up to 80 per cent less electricity than a standard bulb, but produce the same amount of light.

Carbon neutral mobile phonesCarbon neutral mobile phones

All our mobile phones are carbon neutral – using COC2. A typical mobile phone will use electricity generating 20Kg of CO2 per annum. And there are over 1,000,000,000 mobile phones on our planet (and rising). COCO enables us to offset the CO2 impact of our phones.

Equipment maintenanceEquipment maintenance

It is essential to keep all blades sharp on tools – blunt blades not only endanger the operative but machines have to work harder when cutting material. A sharp blade means less time with the machine cutting, therefore less electricity used.

Metal recyclingMetal recycling

ALL waste metal is recycled. According to the BMRA (Visit website: www.recyclemetals.org) the recycling of metal has many benefits.

  • It reduces greenhouse emissions by saving energy, Fanstart mainly recycle Aluminium and steel. The reductions in comparision to using virgin ores are: 95% for Aluminium and 74% for steel
  • Recycling metal reduces landfill by 15 million tonnes a year
  • Recycling metals reduces air pollution
  • Reduces water consumption, and water pollution
  • Helps the UK meet EU Directives for recycling targets

Efficient working practicesEfficient working practices

Ensuring clean and efficient running of sites - efficient working practices mean that less time needs to be spent on site. This has a positive effect with regard to environmental issues. Less fuel used travelling to site, less days on site also mean less power, water etc is consumed.

Energy efficient productsEnergy efficient products

Fanstart uses energy efficient / environmentally conscious products where possible.

  • Rockwool insulation - The volcanic Diabase rock used in the production of this material is not a scarce resource, being present in large quantities in most regions. Every year the earth's volcanoes and plate tectonics produce 38,000 times more rock material than is being used to make Rockwool insulations.
  • Plasterboards – many of our suppliers now use Synthetic Gypsum. This is produced from Power stations during the exhaust chimney scrubbing operations. Using synthetic Gypsum increases product efficiency since the initial stage of the process has been carried out. Plasterboard is 100% Recyclable – around 94% of the make up of a plasterboard is Gypsum powder, which can be re-processed and re-used. The remaining paper etc can be reused in various ways, inc; composting, heat generation and in other building materials.

Recycling of plasterboardRecycling of plasterboard

The recycling of plasterboard is realistically only viable when a large amount of waste plasterboard will be created – say from a office strip out. If existing plasterboards on site are British Gypsum made, then Fanstart Interiors can arrange to use the British Gypsum Plasterboard Recycling Service. There is a fee for using this service, but it offers the collection of all British Gypsum plasterboard, cove, gypsum based ceiling tiles from site, and is available throughout the UK. After collection, all waste is checked and returned to the plasterboard manufacturing process, helping to save valuable raw materials, and therefore offering a very environmentally friendly recycling service. Large Bags or skips can be placed on site, ensuring the safe storage of waste while maintaining site safety.

PAT testingPAT testing

All tool chargers, transformers etc are PAT tested maintaining safety but also ensuring efficiency. Chargers are only used as necessary and are switched off every night when leaving site – reducing energy consumption.

Through the continuing assessment of our energy consumption and requirements, the reduction of our CO2 emissions internally, and the use of carbon offsetting, you can be sure, when it come to your office fit out and refurbishment needs, you're using an environmentally conscious company.
