Timber

Is the timber in your office from a sustainable source? It's worth looking into both at the start of a new project or with your existing materials. Timber should be marked with a symbol such as PEFC. PEFC basically provides an assurance to purchasers and end users of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.

Lighting

Avoid using Halogen downlighters- they use a lot of energy. Florescent lighting is now much better than it used to be - Indirect florescent fittings can create a pleasant work place that is cost effective to run, needs less maintenance, and is energy efficient.

This is probably the area where you can seriously affect the environmental impact of your office refurbishment project and over the lifetime of your finished building.

Insulate wherever you can – we all see the adverts about insulation for our homes, the same principle applies in the office. Insulation not only keeps the cold out in winter [and keeps the heat you've paid for in] in can also keep the heat out in summer [and keep the air con cool you've paid for, in].

Your methods of heating and cooling can be looked at – are your boilers energy efficient? Is your Air con system correctly configured to make maximum impact for your office layout?
